The quick answer
Export project JSON for an editable Vela backup. Export SVG for the 2D plan, PNG for a 3D view, CSV for furniture and cost data, or a design presentation that you can print to PDF. Keep JSON backups outside your browser before clearing site data or changing devices.
Choose the format for the job
- Project JSON: save the editable layout so it can be imported back into Vela.
- Plan SVG: share a scalable top-down drawing for review.
- 3D PNG: capture the current 3D view as an image.
- Furniture CSV: review the furniture schedule and manually entered item information.
- Design presentation: bring views and project details together, then print or save as PDF in the browser.
Keep a backup alongside cloud saving
Signed-in plans are saved in Firestore, while guest projects and unsynced drafts use the current browser. Tracing images are local-only. Private browsing, clearing site data or changing browsers can make local drafts and images unavailable; wait for the cloud-save confirmation and keep JSON backups.
A downloaded JSON file is a separate copy you control. Keep it in a folder you back up and use a filename that includes the project and date, such as living-room-2026-11-01.json. Export a new version before replacing a template or making a major change.
Make a recoverable handover
Before sending files to someone else, reopen the JSON backup and confirm that the layout appears correctly. Keep a plan image or presentation with it so the recipient can understand the concept even if they do not use the editor.
A PNG or PDF cannot be treated as the original editable project. Send JSON when the recipient needs to continue working in Vela, and confirm which version is current. Avoid including reference plans or personal notes that the recipient does not need.
Review cost data before sharing it
Vela’s costs are values entered by the user. A change of currency changes the label; it does not convert amounts with an exchange rate. Review every item and distinguish unpriced pieces from items with an intentionally zero cost.
Record exclusions separately. Tax, delivery, installation and unpriced items are not automatically included, and the exported schedule is not a supplier quotation. Get current quotes before treating an estimate as a purchasing budget.
Print a presentation clearly
Use the presentation export and your browser’s print dialog to preview the PDF. Check orientation, page breaks and whether the project title and images are readable. Save the PDF, then open the downloaded file before sending it.
Keep dimensions and remaining assumptions visible in the accompanying notes. A presentation explains a concept; structural changes, safety clearances and local requirements still need verification by qualified professionals.
